Overdose Support

Without a doubt, one of the most dangerous parts of being addicted to alcohol, illicit drugs, or prescription medications is the risk of an overdose. Overdoses occur when the body takes in more of a harmful substance than it can handle. And the outcomes can range from a minor scare all the way to permanent damage and even death.

What’s more, overdoses are now more common than they’ve ever been. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2017 saw nearly 90 thousand overdose deaths involving drugs like opioids, cocaine, and meth. For some perspective, overdoses from these drugs in 1999 numbered around just 12 thousand.

This isn’t even taking into account alcohol poisoning, which on average claims the lives of around 6 Americans every single day.

It isn’t any wonder, then, that overdoses are now the leading causes of death for U.S. citizens under the age of 50.

Now more than ever, it’s vital to know exactly what to do during an overdose. Because lives very well could depend on it.

The most crucial step during an overdose is to contact emergency services. Not only will these professionals have the expertise to ensure the very best outcome, but they also have access to life-saving medications that non-emergency workers do not. These include drugs like naloxone, which can effectively reverse an opioid overdose within just seconds of being administered.

If you recognize an overdose, then, do not hesitate to call 911. The emergency professionals on the other end of the line will be able to direct you in what to do next while also sending an ambulance to your location.

If you are alone with the victim and you do have to leave their side – even for just a short time to call 911 – it’s important to place them in the recovery position. This position helps reduce the risk of choking and other complications and is a simple step to take that can mean the world of difference.

Emergency services will also likely ask you questions about the incident, such as:

  • What substance(s) did the victim take and did they have a prescription for it?
  • When did they last take it?
  • How much did they consume?
  • What is their age, height, and weight?

They may also tell you to perform CPR to help ensure the best outcome before the ambulance arrives.

Finally, the victim will likely be transferred to a hospital setting where they will undergo more extensive care and be more easily observed over the course of recovery.

In the end, fast action and honesty are key.

The very first step in treating an overdose, however, is being able to spot the symptoms of an overdose early on. And that can be hard to do since they tend to vary from substance to substance. But some of the most common signs to watch out for include:

Opioid Overdose

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Unresponsive to outside stimulus
  • Awake, but unable to talk
  • Breathing is very slow and shallow, erratic, or has stopped
  • For lighter skinned people, the skin tone turns bluish purple, for darker skinned people, it turns grayish or ashen.
  • Choking sounds, or a snore-like gurgling noise (sometimes called the “death rattle”)
  • Vomiting
  • Body is very limp
  • Face is very pale or clammy
  • Fingernails and lips turn blue or purplish black
  • Pulse (heartbeat) is slow, erratic, or not there at all

Stimulant Overdose

  • Profuse sweating
  • Agitation
  • Elevated heartbeat and blood pressure
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Impaired judgment
  • Tremors
  • Aggression and emotional instability
  • Seizures
  • Headache
  • Dilated pupils

Benzodiazepine Overdose

  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Slurred speech
  • Lack of coordination
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coma

Alcohol Overdose

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

12-Step Support Groups

The struggle with addiction is often a lonely one. Many people with substance abuse problems feel like have nowhere to turn for help. And given the toxic stigma and misunderstanding surrounding this brain disorder, countless non-addicts are hesitant to provide it.

Luckily, 12-step groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon provide much-needed emotional and motivational support for anyone struggling with a substance use disorder. These groups are 100% free, open to all, and have presences in many towns and cities all over the country.

Many 12-step meetings follow a group-talk format, where members share their life experiences (both triumphs and turmoil) involving alcohol and drug abuse with others. And in this fashion, members learn more about their own chronic substance use and about addiction as a whole. Most importantly, though, they find the support that’s so necessary in conquering their compulsive problem once and for all.

The effectiveness of 12-step groups is backed up by hard science too. In fact, 12-step therapy is even listed as one of the 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

When it comes to 12-step groups, none is more well-known than Alcoholics Anonymous. And with good reason – this support group was the very first 12-step meeting and was founded in 1935.

And with nearly 2.1 million members and over 120 thousand groups across the world, it is without a doubt one of the largest support groups today.

Within Boulder, Colorado itself, there are so many different AA groups to choose from. And in fact, there are usually multiple meetings taking place throughout the city every day of the week. You can find more information on these groups below.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

While AA is by far the most popular 12-step group, it only tackles one form of addiction – alcoholism. However, Narcotics Anonymous is another 12-step program that deals with any form of substance abuse. That means people suffering from problems with heroin, cocaine, prescription pills, and even alcohol are all welcome at Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

And while it’s not as well-known as Alcoholics Anonymous, NA is still quite widespread. Members hold almost 67 thousand weekly meetings in 139 different countries.

As a pretty well-populated city, Boulder has a number of NA meetings for residents to choose from. You can find their information below.

Al-Anon for Families & Friends

Addiction can be devastating for the individual – that much is obvious. But what many people don’t consider is the enormous toll it can also take on family members and loved ones.

On the one hand, loving an addict on its own can be a monumental task. But there’s also a lack of trust, feelings of betrayal, financial uncertainty, and overall safety of the family that also come into consideration.

Al-Anon is a 12-step group focused specifically on providing the emotional and motivational support for friends and family member of alcoholics. They can also give these individuals the guidance they need to help their loved ones get the help they need and finally overcome their addiction for good.

And like other 12-step groups, Al-Anon is free, 100% confidential, and widely available across the entire country.

There are quite a few local Al-Anon groups to choose from within Boulder. And in fact, almost every day of the week features at least one meeting. Have a look below for more information.

And don’t let the name fool you – these groups cater to a wide range of ages too, not just teens.

Other Addiction Support Groups

For some, 12-step groups may not be the best path to recovery. And just how not everyone will respond the same way to a treatment, these support groups similarly may not mesh well with every addict’s unique needs, beliefs, or goals.

Thankfully, there are plenty of 12-step alternatives to choose from. Below are three of the most popular: SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Moderation Management.

With a firm foundation in modern science and self-empowerment, SMART Recovery is an abstinence-based self-help group focused on giving recovering addicts the techniques and strategies necessary to overcome chronic substance abuse.

Meetings are local, group-oriented, and accepting of all (just like 12-step meetings) but tend to be more focused on the future and less on the past. Meetings are also led by a certified instructor rather than group members themselves.

Find more information about SMART Recovery meetings nearby here.

One of the biggest problems some people have with 12-step groups is the “spirituality” that tends to pervade these meetings. After all, mention of a “higher power” is included in the majority of the 12 steps themselves. And for some, spirituality doesn’t have a place in their idea of recovery.

Secular Organizations for Sobriety (or S.O.S.) takes a religion-free approach to recovery support. It’s also non-profit and made up of non-professional local groups just like AA and NA – and it has been for more than 30 years.

For more information about S.O.S. meetings nearby here.

Not everyone with a drinking problem is considered a full-blown alcoholic. And for them, the solution to their alcohol abuse may not lie in complete abstinence, but rather in better self-control. That’s where Moderation Management comes in.

This program is designed to help problem drinkers get a better handle on their consumption without requiring them to put the bottle down completely. And while it may not be the best option for everyone, it offers an alternative to the numerous other abstinence-based groups available.

Find out more about Moderation Management groups nearby here.

Despite the enormous number of support group options available, not everyone will have the time or the ability to travel to make it to in-person meetings. And a few decades ago, that meant they had to silently suffer from their addiction all on their own.

Thanks to the internet though, now anyone with access to the world wide web can get the motivation and support they need to help them recover. In fact, many of the most popular support groups have robust online presences that make finding support easier than ever.

Below are just a few of the best options for online support groups that the internet has to offer.

Finding Professional Treatment

For the overwhelming majority of addicts, support groups alone will not be enough to keep them clean and sober in the long-term. And while relapse can happen in any type of recovery program, partnering with a professional treatment facility is regarded as the most effective means of kicking an addiction.

But there are a variety of treatment programs out there, each with their own pros and cons, specialties, and ideal patient. And making the decision about which is right for you can be tough when you aren't sure about what to look for, or you don't understand what each program is all about.

There are two main types of addiction treatment programs available: detoxification and rehabilitation.

While detox tends to address the physical side of addiction, rehabilitation focuses more on changing the chronic behaviors that lead to uncontrollable substance abuse.

It’s also worth mentioning that both kinds of treatment are equally necessary. Unfortunately, many people are under the impression that detox alone is enough to prevent future relapse. But as NIDA clearly states:

…medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use. Although detoxification alone is rarely sufficient to help addicts achieve long-term abstinence, for some individuals it is a strongly indicated precursor to effective drug addiction treatment.

The first step in overcoming addiction is drug detox. This is a process that gets rid of the toxins from the alcohol or drugs so that your body can function normally. To understand how detox works, you must recognize what goes on inside the body when you drink.

When you drink alcohol or use certain drugs, it releases feel-good chemicals in the brain that create a euphoric feeling. These positive feelings entice you to use again. As you use more often, the body adjusts to the presence of the alcohol so that it doesn’t respond the same way. You must have more to get the same feel-good effects.

Soon, your brain stops making these chemicals on its own, instead relying on the drugs or alcohol. When you don’t get a fix, your brain begins to panic and sends out alerts in the form of withdrawal symptoms. Once you use again, the body then resumes its normal functioning.

Detox cleanses your body of the substance while readjusting the brain and the rest of the system to learn what normal is again. It can take several days before your body goes back to functioning like it did before you became dependent.

While the majority of programs use a combination, there are two main types of detox programs: medical detox and holistic detox.

Medical Detoxification – With medical detox, patients receive medications that can help reduce the severity of the symptoms of withdrawal. These medications may include anti-depressants like Valium or Xanax to help with emotional symptoms. They may also include certain sedatives to prevent hallucinations or anxiety.

Using medications with detox is beneficial because it helps the individual seek out treatment when otherwise they might not be willing. However, there is also a risk with this process because many of these medications are highly addictive. The doctor will have to reduce the dosage over a period of time, which will lengthen the detox process.

Added to that, many of these medications also have their own long list of side effects, some of which can be as bad as the withdrawal symptoms they’re trying to prevent.

Holistic Detoxification – A second method of detoxing is the natural approach or holistic detoxing. With this option, the focus is on health and wellness. A nutritionist may recommend certain foods for patients to eat, or they may change their daily diet to ensure they’re getting the proper nutrients to put the body in balance.

Many long-term alcoholics suffer from low amounts of certain vitamins and minerals. And this malnutrition can actually lead to some incredibly debilitating conditions like “wet brain.” Hard drug users can also develop a range of serious complications due to improper nutrition too. Restoring proper nutrition, then, can give the body the energy and vitamins it needs to push through withdrawals and recover faster all on its own.

Exercise is also a big part of holistic detox. In addition to physically strengthening the body, exercise also causes a release of “feel good” chemicals that can make the symptoms of withdrawal far more manageable.

When patients complete the detox process, they’ll probably be feeling pretty good. Their mind will be clearer than ever, and they’ll likely have much more energy. They may even feel like they’ve conquered this alcohol thing. But the truth is, they’ve only just begun. The next step – rehabilitation – is where the real work begins.

Rehab is necessary because it helps patients truly understand their addiction. Here they’ll be able to get to the root cause of their addiction so they can treat the underlying problem. Is it some sort of past trauma? Or an underlying mental disorder? Or maybe just a life problem that they can’t seem to cope with on their own? Rehab can help narrow down that core problem and treat it at the source.

On top of that, rehab also teaches patients how to avoid powerful triggers and gain a sense of self-mastery to help them fight off overwhelming cravings.

Essentially, while detox may help prepare the body for a substance-free life, rehab provides the techniques and strategies patients need to rewire their recovering mind.

There are three main kinds of rehabilitation programs: inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, and intensive outpatient programs or IOPs.

Inpatient RehabilitationWith this option, patients are admitted into a facility for treatment for a period of up to 30 days. Patients stay in the facility while attending therapy. There are several benefits to this type of inpatient drug treatment. First, it provides a separation from the stressors and triggers which caused them to start using in the first place. They also can focus solely on recovery instead of dealing with other obligations.

For those with a more severe addiction or those who have relapsed multiple times, 30 days of treatment may not be long enough. They may need to attend a residential rehab facility where they can stay for several weeks or months until they’re able to handle the challenges of life after drug addiction on their own.

Outpatient RehabilitationFor some addicts, they have obligations which cannot be ignored, and which won’t let them attend an inpatient facility. Outpatient rehab may be the only option which will work for them. With this type of treatment, patients attend therapy for a few hours each week, generally in the evenings. The schedules are generally flexible, working around a job, school or responsibilities with their kids.

This type of treatment is ideal for people who have only been using drugs for a few months or those who have friends and family for support when they aren’t in treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)This method of treatment is more intense than regular outpatient rehab. Instead of attending therapy a few hours each week, patients treatment sessions that often last several hours apiece. They still get to go home at night or even go to work or school when they aren’t in treatment, but they spend much more time in therapy.

This option is ideal for those who have a more serious addiction, but they cannot be away from home or other responsibilities for extended periods. The flexibility of the treatment allows them to get the help they need even if they can’t go to an inpatient addiction treatment facility.

According to the principles of effective treatment as outlined by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, no single treatment is appropriate for everyone. As far as we’ve come in better understanding and treating addiction, it affects each individual differently. And in that same vein, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery.

It's critical, then, that every recovering addict understands exactly what each treatment program offers before partnering with them. Otherwise, they may accidentally check into a facility that isn't equipped to handle their unique individual needs. And that can result in a drastically smaller chance of a full recovery.

Below are a few questions to consider asking as you make your decision on which treatment facility is right for you.

  • What kinds of services do they offer (detox, inpatient/outpatient/IOP rehab, residential)
  • Do they have 24/7 nursing care?
  • Is their program medication or holistic in nature?
  • Do they treat co-occurring disorders?
  • Are they nationally accredited?
  • Do they have individualized treatment plans?
  • Do they have staff experienced in treating your specific kind of addiction?
  • Do they accept your insurance?
  • What is their success rate?
  • Do they offer aftercare referral services?
  • How long does their program last?
  • What is your staff-to-patient ratio?

Within Boulder, there are a number of treatment options. These include:

  • Around 5 sober living homes
  • Less than 10 rehab facilities
  • Only about 2 detox programs

However, the top priority when it comes to recovery is finding the right treatment program, not just the closest. And for many, that may mean searching outside of their hometown for recovery programs.

By expanding your search horizons beyond where you live, you open up the door to higher quality treatment services. And that often translates directly to a lower rate of relapse.

But beyond that, there are a number of other benefits to making the choice to travel for treatment.

  • It offers more privacy and confidentiality.
  • It allows patients to focus solely on their own recovery.
  • It can make it harder to drop out of the program.
  • It helps solidify the commitment to recovery.

In the end, the most important thing is getting the right treatment for you. And leaving home to get it might be your best bet.

Our Closest Facilities:

One common misconception is that addiction treatment is far more expensive than most people can afford. And in fact, about one-third of recovering addicts who knew they needed help but didn’t get it cited cost as a leading reason. However, the truth of the matter is that treatment has actually never been more cost effective than it is today.

This is due in part to the combination of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). These new laws have now made it practically required for insurance providers to offer equivalent coverage for both physical and mental disorders, including addiction. And as a result, many people with insurance end up paying little more than a copay for the full extent of their recovery treatment.

Some even graduate programs without any out-of-pocket costs.

Even still, it’s important to verify your insurance with any program before enrolling to avoid any surprises.

Federally funded insurance programs (like Medicaid and Medicare) are also required to cover at least some form of treatment, though not to the extent of some private insurers.

Added to that, many addiction facilities also offer a number of options to make it even easier to afford treatment. These include:

  • Sliding scale payments
  • Financing options
  • Payment plans
  • Sponsorship
  • Individual grants

Finally, when compared to the cost of maintaining an addiction, finding an effective treatment program is without a doubt the cheapest option when faced with a substance abuse problem.
