If you’re struggling with alcoholism or a dependence on drugs, you may be looking for addiction resources to help break free from this life.

And if you live in Berthoud, there are plenty of community resources to choose from.

Just as substance abuse has grown into one of the top killers in the United States today, Addiction in the state of Colorado continues to be a serious problem. In fact, Colorado has one of the highest overdose rates in the entire country.

Added to that, admissions to substance abuse treatment programs have tripled in the past several years too.

If you or someone you love is struggling with a drug or alcohol problem, it’s critical to know where to find help – whether you’re trying to figure out what to do in case of an overdose, don’t know where to find local support groups, or just want to know what to look for when it comes to treatment.

This guide takes a deeper dive into some of the most helpful alcohol and drug addiction resources in Berthoud and its surrounding areas.

Spotting the Signs of an Overdose

Overdoses are one of the deadliest side effects of unchecked substance abuse.

Nearly every addictive substance can be overdosed on – from heavy hitters like heroin and crystal meth to less stigmatized drugs like alcohol and anti-anxiety prescription medications.

And while some of these drugs are more dangerous than others, they all carry a very serious health risk when too much is taken.

That’s why it’s so important to be able to spot the signs of an overdose so that you can get help as soon as possible. Each second counts when it comes to overdosing. And knowing what to look for is the very first step to saving a life.

Cocaine is by far one of the most well-known and powerful drugs available today.

In its most pure state, it can cause serious health problems that can often lead to permanent damage for a variety of vital organs. But since it’s so commonly mixed or “cut” with a variety of other fillers, the cause of overdose is typically a combination of the detrimental effects of the coke itself and other additives as well.

Some signs of a serious cocaine overdose according to MedlinePlus include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

One of the main contributors to the ever-worsening opioid epidemic, heroin is as addictive as it is deadly. In fact, from 2012 to 2017, the number of heroin deaths in the United States rose by an overwhelming 261% from 5,925 to 15,446.

Part of this is, of course, due to the rise in people addicted to prescription opioids. Once a user runs out of a legitimate prescription and is already hooked, many tend to move right on to heroin. Surprisingly enough, it’s often cheaper and more easily-available than prescription opioids.

And given just how bad the heroin problem has become, it’s never been more important than it is today to be able to recognize the signs of an overdose on this dangerous drug.

MedlinePlus lists out a number of notable symptoms of a heroin overdose, organized by different parts of the body. This list is reproduced below.

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • SKIN
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription drugs are more popular than they ever have been. In fact, as many as 55% Americans regularly take prescription medications today.

However, a more medicated population also means a higher risk of abusing these powerful drugs – some of which can even be more powerful some of the most notorious street drugs.

Three most popular classes of prescription medications being abused today are prescription opioids (like OxyContin and Vicodin), benzodiazepines (like Xanax and Ativan), and prescription stimulants (like Adderall and Ritalin).

Prescription Opioids

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are several telltale signs of a prescription opioid overdose. These include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Benzodiazepines

Overdosing on benzodiazepines like Xanax may show certain signs like:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Coma
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of cognition
  • Amnesia
  • Paradoxical agitation
  • Respiratory depression
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)

Prescription Stimulants

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), some of the most common signs of a prescription stimulant overdose include:

  • Restlessness
  • Tremors
  • Overactive reflexes
  • Rapid breathing
  • Confusion
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations
  • Panic states
  • Abnormally increased fever
  • Muscle pains
  • Weakness
  • Heart problems
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Nerve problems that can lead to a seizure
  • Abnormally high or low blood pressure
  • Circulation failure

Also known as Crystal Meth in some forms, methamphetamines are dangerous stimulants that can be incredibly addictive and overpowering. Often chronic meth users will go on days-long binges of the drug where they seldom eat, drink, or sleep.

As you might guess, this can have seriously disastrous effects on the health of the body and the mind.

But meth abuse can also lead to a deadly overdose when taken in high amounts. Below are just some of the signs of a methamphetamine overdose to look out for.

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

After you’ve identified the signs of an overdose, the next step is getting professional help. This part is absolutely crucial. Do not delay. Do not hesitate. And do not think that they’ll snap out of it on their own.

Each second is precious when it comes to an overdose, so call 9-1-1 as soon as you spot the symptoms. They’ll be able to guide you on what to do next. They may tell you how to administer lifesaving care, ask for information like what kinds of drugs the victim took and how much, and other important questions.

On top of that, they’ll also likely send an ambulance to your location to transport the victim to a hospital or emergency care provider. Within the Berthoud area, these may include:

Where Can You Get Help for Addiction in Berthoud?

Many addiction resources are available, but you may not be aware of them or know where to look. Whether you’re looking for alcohol abuse resources or help for drug addiction, you’ll discover numerous resources for addicts in Berthoud. This small town has a population of just around 5000, which means your resources within the city limits are minimal.

However, Berthoud is located between Fort Collins and Denver with several other cities nearby. You can often find additional resources at one of these locations.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous was the original 12-step fellowship group, founded in the 1930s by two alcoholics who found a solution to their drinking problem. They proceeded to share this solution with others who continued to do the same. There are thousands of meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous every day worldwide.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a free way to find a solution to your drinking problem; after all, “the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There is no fee to attend an AA meeting, only a requested donation if you have the ability to do so.”

If you struggle with alcoholism, you can find help right in your hometown. Alcoholics Anonymous has groups all over the country, in and around many cities and larger towns.

Unfortunately, there are only two AA meetings that take place within Berthoud itself. These meetings are listed below.

And if either of these meetings in Berthoud isn’t the right fit, doesn’t match your schedule, or just isn’t what you’re looking for, there are a variety of groups not far away. Below are some of the closest ones.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous was the second Anonymous 12-step fellowship following Alcoholics Anonymous. It’s aimed specifically at recovering drug addicts in general instead of specifically alcoholics. These meetings use the same twelve steps as AA but rephrased to deal with narcotics.

You may need help with a drug addiction. You’ll find Narcotics Anonymous (NA) groups around Berthoud that you can attend. They are similar to AA meetings, but the focus is on drug abuse and addiction.

Al-Anon & Nar-Anon Meetings

The pain that addiction causes isn’t confined to the substance abuser alone. Friends, family members, coworkers, and countless others are all often hurt by their loved one’s dependency as well. And while getting help for the addicts themselves is often the first priority, those who are close to them may also need support as well.

That’s where Al-Anon and Nar-Anon come in. These 12-step groups are focused specifically on helping people who have been hurt by someone else’s addiction. And in the Berthoud area, there are a number of meetings to choose from.

There is only one Al-Anon meeting that takes place in Berthoud.

Are There Free Addiction Resources in Berthoud?

While your health insurance will cover most costs associated with drug addiction treatment, you can find free resources in Berthoud for addiction help. AA, NA, and Al-Anon are all free with no fees to join and no other obligations.

You can also go online and find meetings for AA or NA that you can participate in from your laptop, smartphone or tablet. If you don’t want to attend meetings in person, online groups can offer support while providing you with another layer of anonymity. In a town the size of Berthoud, you may not feel comfortable going to group meetings. Online meetings and books on addiction can help you in your goal to overcome substance abuse.

Added to that, professional addiction treatment is also significantly more affordable today than it was even a few years ago. Recent changes to the federal healthcare laws now require insurance companies to help cover addiction treatment.

That being said, it’s still important to verify your insurance with a care provider before you partner with a specific facility.

On top of that, many treatment centers also offer financing or even full scholarships.

Plus, even if you do have to pay at least a little out of pocket for treatment, it’s likely going to be just fractions of the enormous cost of maintaining an addiction.

How Can I Get the Help I Need as an Addict in Berthoud?

If you’re seeking help for alcoholism or drug addiction, you can reach out to one of these free resources or a counselor.

It’s often advisable to choose multiple resources to help you maintain your recovery for the long term. For instance, you may need to find a drug addiction treatment center around Berthoud, then stay in a sober living home for a while and attend a 12-step program for several months or longer.

There’s no shame in looking for resources to help with your addiction whether you’re just starting recovery, or you’ve been clean for weeks or even months.

If you’re struggling with addiction right now, you may find that checking into a professional drug treatment center is your best hope for recovery. Partnering with an actual drug treatment program is not only a much more effective way overcoming a substance use disorder, but it’s also significantly safer.

They can offer a variety of medications that can end up making withdrawal much more bearable and even help eliminate cravings. More importantly, though, they can also help monitor your health throughout the process to ensure you don’t experience any life-threatening complications along the way.

One of the most important parts of starting your recovery is finding a treatment program that will meet your specific needs along the way. There is no effective cookie-cutter approach to treatment that works for everyone. And the closer a program matches what you need, the more successful your recovery is going to be.

But how do you know which facility is a good fit?

First, it’s important to recognize that even though there are a couple of treatment programs within Berthoud, it might be best to look outside of the area as well. With the lack of stigma and more varied options, travelling for treatment can actually end up being the best choice you’ve ever made.

Next, think about what questions you’re going to ask when trying to see if a facility is right for you. What do you need? What do you want? And what do they offer that matches up with those needs and those wants?

Here are a few questions to get you started.

Are you an inpatient or an outpatient facility?

Do you perform medical detoxification services or are you solely a rehabilitation program?

Do you offer individualize programs that cater to each patient?

What about dual diagnosis? Are you equipped to treat co-occurring disorders?

Are you a holistic program or do you follow a more medicated approach?

What is your staff-to-patient ratio?

Are your programs evidence-based?

Are you nationally accredited?

Do you offer family counseling services too?

What about sober living housing?

Which insurance providers do you accept?
